Military to hold cold weather training in YK this weekend

If you’re out and about in Yellowknife this weekend, you might see the Canadian Armed Forces out in the snow.

Around 50 personnel from both Edmonton and Yellowknife will be in town for a basic winter warfare course, teaching new members how to operate with winter and arctic equipment in a safe manner.

“Essentially what it is is ‘Winter Environment 101’ training for new people,” said Maj. Jayson Tarzwell of the Loyal Edmonton Regiment.

The training is meant to improve member’s winter skills by having them pitch survival shelters, start stoves, and safely handle fuel in cold conditions.

They’ll also be practicing snowshoeing, skiing and reviewing proper first-aid treatments for cold-related injuries.

The training will be held in the Banting Lake and Berry Hill area starting Friday until Sunday afternoon.

Military activities aren’t expected to interfere with the general public, and people will still be allowed in the area as normal.
