NWT road safety campaign nabs 22 impaired drivers

22 people were charged with impaired driving as part of this year’s Operation Gingerbread in the Northwest Territories.

That’s down from last year’s total of 29 charges laid.

Police checked up to 1,500 vehicles as part of the annual road safety campaign, which wrapped up Jan. 1.

While fewer people were charged with impaired driving this year, police say more drivers were issued suspensions for driving while impaired.

Other charges under the Motor Vehicles Act and Criminal Code were also laid over the course of the operation.

“Impaired driving is an entirely preventable cause of death and injuries that has immense costs and devastating effects in our communities” said RCMP Cpl. Todd Scaplen with the Hay River detachment.

“One tragic accident is too many. Together we can make a difference.”
