Coroner orders autopsy after Whati man dies in Yellowknife

The territory’s chief coroner has ordered an investigation into the sudden death of a Whati man in Yellowknife early Wednesday.

Cathy Menard says the 41-year-old died at Stanton Hospital after being taken there from a local residence.

The man has been identified locally and by other media outlets as Matthew Nitsiza.

“The NWT coroner’s service has ordered a post-mortem examination,” said Menard while stressing that foul play is not suspected.

“We’ll look at all of the circumstances around the case and the person’s medical history.

“Sometimes we’re able to determine – with all of the information and circumstances that we have – the cause of death and sometimes we need a post-mortem examination to also assist.”

Menard says it’s still way too early to determine a cause of death.
