Yellowknife named capital of the NWT 50 years ago today

Yellowknife was named the capital of the Northwest Territories exactly 50 years ago today.

To this day, Yellowknife remains the only city and largest community in the territory.

Located on the northern shore of Great Slave Lake, Yellowknife was founded in the 1930s after gold was discovered in the region.

The city quickly became the centre of economic activity in the territory, and was named the capital on January 18, 1967.

Nowadays, Yellowknife is primarily a government town and service centre for the diamond mines.

With a population of roughly 20,000, the city is at least five times larger than any other community in the Northwest Territories, according to the NWT Bureau of Statistics.
