YK man charged after armed robberies over the holidays

An 18-year-old man has been charged after allegedly attempting to rob two convenience stores in Yellowknife over the holidays, according to RCMP.

At around 4:20 a.m. on Monday, police received a report of an armed robbery at the Shell gas station on Range Lake Road.

RCMP say a man entered the store holding what appeared to be a knife and demanded money. An undisclosed amount of cash was taken, and the suspect got away.

The following morning, police received a similar call from the Winks convenience store on Forrest Drive, where a suspect had entered the store brandishing what appeared to be a metal pipe and demanded money.

No cash was taken from the convenience store. The suspect fled the scene, and was apprehended by RCMP shortly thereafter.

While in custody, the man attempted to escape, but was caught again and escorted back into custody.

Joanasie Qumuaqtuq, 18, has been charged with two counts of robbery, two counts of disguise with intent and one count of escape from lawful custody.

He’s scheduled to appear in court on Friday.
