An unknown substance found during that investigation was later determined to be furanyl fentanyl, a street opioid sold as a designer drug.

“This investigation has served as a stark reminder that the dangers of fentanyl and other drugs are not just a ‘big city problem,’” said RCMP Sgt. Dean Riou in a statement.

Yellowknife resident Darcy Oake, 22, has been charged with:

  • Unlawfully importing a substance
  • Trafficking a substance
  • Possession for the purpose of trafficking
  • Causing bodily harm by criminal negligence
  • Breach of recognizance

Meanwhile, RCMP say the Canada Border Services Agency seized a package sent from China at its mail processing plant in Vancouver this week.

Police believe the package, which contained furanyl fentanyl and was destined for Yellowknife, is linked to this investigation.
