Yellowknife, NWT – For the first time since the Sochi Olympics, Yellowknife short track speed skater Michael Gilday is back in the city, and it won’t take him long to get back on the ice.

Gilday will take part in a skate with the Yellowknife speed skating club tonight at the Multiplex, before accepting a cheque on behalf of KidSport NWT from Erasmus Apparel.

Sarah Erasmus of Erasmus Apparel says the cheque is for $3,088, all of which was generated by Gilday t-shirts the company sold leading up to the Olympics.

Erasmus says she’s stoked to have the Olympian back in the territory’s capital.

“Michael Gilday will be skating with the Yellowknife Speed Skating Club and then after that we’re going to present a cheque together to KidSport for all the proceeds we raised by selling the shirts.”

Erasmus explains the decision to donate to Kidsport.

“The Yellowknife Speed Skating Club approached me to take part so I suggested we donate the money we raise back to the community. I always like to support KidSport because not all kids get to play so it’s nice to get more kids out there reaching their goals.”

Erasmus says over 300 shirts were sold with some being sent as far away as Vancouver, Montreal and Ottawa.
