Police warn of phishing scam disguised as email from CRA

Police have issued a public warning about an email scam that’s been reported in Yellowknife recently.

The fraudulent email claims to be from the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) offering a link for a tax refund. But police say it’s simply a phishing scam designed to obtain personal information or money.

RCMP say it’s important to think twice whenever asked to give up personal or banking information online.

If you think you’ve come across an email like this, police recommend that you:

  • Do not take immediate action, and verify that what you are being told is the truth
  • Ask yourself why the CRA would be asking for personal information over the phone or email that they likely already have on file for you as a taxpayer
  • Contact the CRA to confirm that you owe back taxes, or are entitled to a refund, before providing any personal or banking information
  • Seek more information about fraud scams involving the CRA from the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
