YK1 School Board to hold public meeting Wednesday

Yellowknife, NWT – Parents of Yellowknife public school students and other education stakeholders are encouraged to attend a public meeting Wednesday night on the future direction of the YK1 School Board.

YK1 Facilities Committee Chair Heather Clarke says the aim of the meeting is to discuss key issues related to future endeavours, including changes to grade configuration and the possible transfer of a school to the local French School Board through the GNWT.

“The GNWT’s request to transfer a school facility along with our recognition of the discrepancies in enrollment across our district, the changes that are coming to the education renewal and innovation and the introduction of junior kindergarten have all served as a catalyst for us as a board to say we need a plan.”

Clarke says public meetings and consultation are a big part of that plan.

Clarke says it’s the board’s responsibility to consider long-term goals and needs of students, but it wants to hear from parents, staff and stakeholders in order to do that.

Wednesday night’s meeting starts at 7 at William MacDonald School.
