Most lakes in and around Yellowknife now safe to walk on

Most lakes in and around Yellowknife are safe to walk on now that ice levels have reached appropriate thickness.

That’s according to the City of Yellowknife, which measures ice thickness every year with the help of the Great Slave Snowmobile Association.

Until ice reaches at least six inches thick, residents are advised not to walk on it at all.

As of Monday, most lakes in the area were covered by at least that much ice with the only exceptions being the Dettah ice road entrance near School Draw Avenue and the boat launch on Yellowknife Bay.

You can find other ice measurement and safety information here.
