‘I was really quite angry’: Yellowknife carvings stolen

Half a dozen carvings were reported stolen from Frozen Rock Studios in Yellowknife late last week.

Artist John Sabourin says four of his carvings were stolen and two more belonging to another carver – Derrald Taylor – were also taken sometime Thursday night.

Sabourin says the person or people who stole the carvings cut through a padlocked bracket to get into the building.

After making it inside, they made off with carvings worth thousands of dollars.

“I was really quite angry,” Sabourin told Moose FM after he discovered the carvings had been taken. “I feel like someone’s out there being dishonest and stealing art to maybe turn it around to sell it.”

Sabourin says it can take up to five full days to finish a single carving.

Police are aware of the incident and are investigating.
