NWT Mountie will not face charges after assault complaint

An external review into a complaint regarding an RCMP member assaulting an elder in Fort Resolution has recommended no charges be brought.

The alleged incident occurred when two officers tried to gain entry into a home in the community last September.

The victim says one of the members elbowed her in the face and restrained her while officers were looking for someone else.

RCMP in the territory opened up their own investigation into the incident last October and determined that no charges were warranted, before ordering the external review.

That review was carried out by the Medicine Hat Police service, who concurred that no charges were recommended.

Pictures of 71-year-old Loretta Edjericon’s bruised face quickly circulated within the community and beyond.

Police say an investigation into the cause of her injuries is ongoing.

“The images that were seen in the media were very disturbing,” reads an RCMP press release on the incident, issued Monday night.

“Photos were shown of an Elder who was the victim of violence. The G Division RCMP Major Crimes Unit continues to assist the Fort Resolution RCMP in their investigation.”
