Registration opens for 2017 Dead North Film Festival

Amateur and veteran filmmakers have until the end of the month to register for the 2017 Dead North Film Festival.

The Yellowknife-based festival challenges northern filmmakers to make short films (10 minutes or less) in the horror, science fiction or fantasy genre over a span of two months in the dead of winter.

Now in its fifth year, Dead North is open primarily to the circumpolar world and has seen over 50 films submitted since its inception – including 25 last year alone.

Some of those entries have gone on to screen at major festivals around the world, including Fantasia and the Clermont-Ferrand Film Festival.

“Dead North is designed to showcase the Northern imagination and enable even the most amateur filmmakers to bring their ideas successfully to the screen,” said festival director Meagan Wohlberg.

“We hope to see entries from communities across the circumpolar world that highlight the chilling beauty of the North.”

Dead North has grown in popularity over the last five years, attracting more and more submissions every year.

Films that are submitted as part of this year’s festival will be screened at Yellowknife’s Capitol Theatre between Feb. 23 and Feb. 26, 2017.

The deadline to register is Nov. 30 and the cost is $100 per film crew.
