Yellowknife’s fire chief retires after 30 years of firefighting

There’s been a shakeup at Yellowknife’s fire hall after veteran firefighter Darcy Hernblad called it a career last week.

Hernblad retired after 31 years of firefighting in Yellowknife. He had also been the city’s fire chief since 2010.

Effective Dec. 5, John Fredericks will take over as Yellowknife’s new chief. He’s currently chief of the fire department in Kirkland Lake, Ont.

In the meantime, deputy chiefs Gerda Groothuizen and Craig McLean will share the responsibility of the department’s top job on a rotating basis.

Another deputy chief, Mike Hoffman, also left the department last week after four years on the job.
