BREAKDOWN – YK’s Homelessness Road Map Action Plan explained

The City of Yellowknife unveiled its proposal to address the city’s homelessness issue with a new action plan Friday.

The Yellowknife Homelessness Road Map Action Plan details 11 key points the city and GNWT will be focusing on to alleviate the growing problem of homelessness in the community.

The plan includes the creation of street outreach services (SOS) and detox facilities, the extension of shelter hours to operate 24 hours a day and receiving $150,000 in funding from the GNWT for Housing First programs.

In addition, up to $600,000 will also be provided to renovate existing shelters into semi-independent units to alleviate the strain emergency shelters in Yellowknife have been experiencing as of late.

Eleven priority actions, three priority areas

The report comes following the Homelessness in Yellowknife Partnership Forum held in late April.

The working group at that forum identified eleven priority actions to be taken, falling under three main areas: Improved coordination and collaboration between organizations in Yellowknife, introducing new or enhanced services to address homelessness, and developing long-term plans and strategic framework development.

Here is a breakdown of the 11 points the city identified.
