Man, 19, charged in sexual assault at Folk on the Rocks

A Yellowknife man has been charged with one count of sexual assault in connection with an assault that happened at this year’s Folk on the Rocks.

Altogether, RCMP received three complaints of sexual assault over the course of the music festival, which ran from Jul. 14 to Jul. 16 along the shores of Long Lake.

Of those complaints, police say one has resulted in charges being laid, one has concluded without charges and the third is still under investigation.

At one point during the festival, an emcee told a crowd gathered inside the beer garden that consent is always required while alluding to multiple incidents of unwanted touching.

Ian Campeau, a member of A Tribe Called Red, also addressed allegations of sexual assault during the festival in a Facebook post he wrote after one of his friends was assaulted.

Shortly after Folk on the Rocks, organizers with the NWT Pride festival decided to incorporate signage for ‘safe spaces’ into their event.

Volunteers were also trained how to deal with sexual assault complaints should they arise and how to be more visible during the festival.

As far as Moose FM knows, there were no complaints of sexual assault during this year’s NWT Pride festival.

Meanwhile, Round is scheduled to make his next court appearance on Nov. 22.
