TPP dangerous for First Nations people, warns YK presentation

The Council of Canadians NWT chapter will be hosting a talk on the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) Agreement Wednesday night, speaking out against the controversial agreement.

The talk will be led by BC First Nations councilor Brenda Sayers.

Sayers represented the Hupacasath First Nation during a court challenge against the Canada-China Foreign Investor Promotion and Protection Agreement (FIPA) from 2012 to 2014.

Now, she’s warning of the dangers of the TPP for Canadians, specifically concerning the environment and Indigenous rights in the country.

“(The TPP) removes our rights as First Nations to create our own laws and policies, and our right to govern the land,” Sayers explained.

“We have the right to govern our lands. We have the right to say when logging is enough or when fishing is enough.

“This will be removed from us through the TPP in a bigger way that it already has been through the Canada-China FIPA.”

Sayers will be speaking at the Northern United Place Auditorium at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
