Yellowknife man wins $50K from lottery ticket he forgot about

A Yellowknife man is over $50,000 richer thanks to a winning lottery ticket he almost forgot about.

Maximo Ramos won $50,120 from a winning Western 649 ticket he bought ahead of the May 25 draw. The ticket sat in a drawer for a couple of months before he found it and decided to get it checked.

And it’s a good thing he did. He won $50,000 for matching five numbers and the bonus on one line and an additional $120 in subsidiary prizes on the same ticket.

“I used the self-checker at Shoppers Drug Mart,” he told the Western Canada Lottery Corporation following the win. “I was so surprised and instantly happy!”

Ramos purchased the winning ticket from Trevor’s Independent Grocer on Old Airport Road. While he bought the ticket in late May, the lottery corporation only announced his win last week.

Ramos says he’ll use the $50,000 to pay off bills and visit family in the Philippines.
