Ditch the car and walk to work Thursday for World Car Free Day

NWT residents will join people around the world Thursday in ditching their cars for their morning commutes in celebration of World Car Free Day.

The annual event encourages city dwellers to leave their cars at home and try more sustainable forms of transport like cycling or public transit.

This year, an estimated 1,500 cities in 40 countries are expected to get involved in the car-free movement in an effort to reduce traffic, noise and pollution.

In Yellowknife, the municipal government, Ecology North and territorial department of Environment and Natural Resources invite residents to either walk, bike or use free public transit to get to work.

Businesses and schools also had the opportunity to register teams in corporate and classroom challenges to track participation.
