Grade 6 students from Yellowknife’s Mildred Hall School had their work cut out for them Wednesday morning.
More than 20 students spent the first half of their day planting 58 trees and berry bushes in front of the school as part of National Tree Day.
Tree Canada hosted the event in partnership with Ecology North and the city’s public school board.
“We chose the Grade 6 students because they were the first group of kids to start off with our gardens,” said Katey Simmons, principal of Mildred Hall School.
“We wanted to [plant the trees] in spots where they’ll grow. Our terrain is quite rocky so it has to be something that’s natural to the habitat here.”
Students spent their morning planting spruce trees, pine trees and berry bushes all over school property.
Tree Canada, a national non-profit, has planted nearly 80 million trees and greened more than 580 schoolyards across the country since 1992.
