GNWT announces plans to merge transportation, public works

The GNWT has announced plans to merge the departments of transportation and public works and services to create a single department of infrastructure.

In a statement Monday, the government says it’s working on ‘organizational restructuring’ proposals as part of its ongoing efforts to ensure it remains on a fiscally sustainable path.

Proposals also include the merging of corporate service functions currently carried out by several departments – including finance, human resources and executive.

The government says proposed restructuring has been reflected in draft business plans that have been shared with legislative committees for their review and input.

Meanwhile, employees who would be impacted by any potential changes have also been notified.

If the restructuring proposals are approved by MLAs, changes would take effect on April 1, 2017.

“Our government needs to make sure it is living within its means so it can continue to provide the programs and services that NWT residents need,” said Premier Bob McLeod.

“Taking a hard look at our structure and how we do business is an important part of ensuring we are living within our means.”
