GNWT to test public alerting system Wednesday morning

The Government of the Northwest Territories will test its public alerting system, NWT Alert Ready, on Wednesday morning.

Residents may see and hear the public test at 9:55am on cable networks and radio stations across the NWT – including 100.1 the Moose.

NWT Alert Ready is being developed by the territorial government in cooperation with local broadcasters to provide public alerts to NWT residents during emergencies and disasters.

Further testing will continue over the next few months to assess functionality and reliability.

The Alert Ready national website lists a few possible reasons for deploying emergency broadcasts. Among them:

  • Wildfires
  • Chemical, biological or radiological substances – or drinking water contamination
  • A decrease in air quality
  • Terrorist threat
  • Animal danger
  • Amber alerts regarding child abduction
