Denecho King “exploited” gap in security at YK jail, GNWT says

The territorial government says the initial findings of a review in the escape of Denecho King have revealed a “pre-existing gap” in physical security.

King, 23, escaped custody from the North Slave Corrections Centre on the morning of August 10. He was arrested three days later by RCMP on August 13.

The Critical Incident review has so far concluded that King was aware of the security gap, allowing him to gain access to the roof of the jail during his escape.

“I want to assure residents of Yellowknife, this was an isolated incident,” said a press release from the Minister of Justice, Louis Sebert.

The department of justice says inmates can no longer access the area where King escaped, as they determine what security modifications are needed.

A Critical Incident Review was launched after escaped, which will work toward identifying the factor(s) that could have contributed to King’s escape. The report will also include recommendations for any improvements.

“A comprehensive review of the security at the North Slave Correctional Centre is now underway,” said Sebert. “I continue to have full confidence in the Corrections staff at our facilities.”
