Two young offenders back in custody after leaving facility

Two young offenders who were reported missing from Yellowknife’s North Slave Young Offenders Facility have been returned to custody.

Police say the two walked away from open custody around 9:00am Friday. Later that night, an off-duty corrections guard reported a sighting of them in the downtown area.

Police were able to find the young offenders and arrest them without incident at a nearby apartment building.

As young offenders, their names, pictures and descriptions couldn’t be made public. However, neither offender was considered to be dangerous.

Their escape from open custody came at a sensitive time for the city.

Less than two weeks ago, a man charged with murder and attempted murder escaped from the neighbouring North Slave Correctional Facility. 23-year-old Denecho King was found and arrested three days later.
