Niven highway down to one lane this weekend for resurfacing

The department of transportation says the highway between Niven Gate and Yellowknife Motors will be reduced to one lane this weekend as crews began resurfacing.

Drivers are being told to expect some delays and to follow the flagmen’s instructions at all times.

“The intersection with the legislative assembly and Nova [hotel] will be improved, so that it can take the extra traffic we expect to be turning into that complex,” Kevin McLeod, the territory’s director of highways and marine, told The Moose in July.

“Then we’ll resurface it, take out any rough spots and repaint the lines.”

The territorial government still owns the highway, meaning curb and sidewalk installation will not be a part of the project. Discussions are ongoing about transferring the road to the city from the GNWT.

For anyone looking access the the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre or the Legislative Assembly, you’re asked to use 49 Avenue (Veterans Memorial Drive) then down 49 Street past the Northern Frontier Visitors Tourism Information Centre.

Construction is expected to wrap up by September.
