Escaped prisoner Denecho King arrested in Yellowknife

Denecho King, the alleged killer who escaped from Yellowknife’s jail this week, was arrested in the city Saturday morning.

The 23-year-old escaped from the North Slave Correctional Centre around 11:15am Wednesday. He had been unlawfully at large for three days.

His escape triggered fear in the city because of his criminal background. He’s considered dangerous to the public, having previously been charged with murder and attempted murder.

Around 10:05am Saturday, King was arrested after police established a perimeter in the area of Sissons Court, roughly two kilometers from the jail off Taylor Road.

Once police confirmed King’s presence in an apartment building, an officer used a megaphone to deliver messages to him. The 23-year-old was arrested without incident shortly afterwards.

Yellowknife RCMP say they used “a variety of investigational techniques, combined with tips and leads” that led them to King.

“Through the hard work and professional conduct of our RCMP members, we were able to bring this search to a successful conclusion without incident,” said RCMP Insp. Matt Peggs, the Yellowknife detachment commander.

“Yellowknife RCMP would like to thank the citizens of Yellowknife for the assistance through the tips provided, and for their cooperation with the traffic checkstops and neighbourhood inquiries.”

King, who now faces additional charges for being unlawfully at large, was brought back to the North Slave Correctional Centre. His escape from the facility last week was the first since it opened back in 2004.

The territory’s Department of Justice has ordered a full review of the incident to determine the nature of his escape and ways to prevent similar incidents going forward.
