As police in Yellowknife continue to search for escaped prisoner Denecho King, officials are asking the public to use social media cautiously as it may interfere with their investigation.
The 23-year-old remains unlawfully at large after escaping from the North Slave Correctional Centre on Wednesday morning.
King is considered dangerous to the public, having previously been charged with murder and attempted murder.
On Friday morning, police reiterated that they are still actively searching for the escaped prisoner.
As their investigation continues, the Mounties are asking residents to be wary of anything they see online pertaining to the apprehension of King.
Police are also asking the public to refrain from posting any police activity on social media so that their investigation isn’t compromised.
“The RCMP will advise when King has been apprehended,” read an RCMP statement issued Friday.
“We have a media team available to put out a press release as soon as it has been confirmed King is in custody.”
Yellowknife detachment spokesperson Marie York-Condon added: “We understand the public’s need for information on the status of Denecho King being unlawfully at large.
“We pledge to release to the media, and thus the public, an update should King be apprehended, as soon as possible.”
On Thursday, RCMP Insp. Matt Peggs, the Yellowknife detachment commander, told reporters every available officer in Yellowknife is being used in the search for King.
He also warned that anyone knowingly withholding information about his whereabouts could face charges.
