Last Tragically Hip show to be broadcast at Somba K’e Plaza

For anyone hoping to catch a glimpse of The Tragically Hip’s last concert later this month, the city of Yellowknife has you covered.

In a press release on Friday, the city announced a large screen will be assembled at Somba K’e Civic Plaza, next to city hall, which will feature a full broadcast of the Tragically Hip’s last concert on August 20 at the K-Rock Centre in their hometown of Kingston, Ontario.

“We’re excited to…provide Yellowknifer’s the opportunity to watch an iconic Canadian band perform from their hometown,” Deputy Mayor Adrian Bell said in a press release. “I’m sure it will be an amazing show.”

The broadcast will air from from 6:30 to 9:30 pm at the amphitheater section of the park. You’re encouraged to bring lawn chairs, blankets and food.

In the event of unfavorable weather, the concert will be shown at the Fieldhouse.

The band announced on May 24 that Gord Downie, the band’s lead vocals and guitarist, had been diagnosed with terminal brain cancer. Despite Downie’s diagnosis, the band announced they would tour over the summer.
