Reid Lake, Cameron River parks reopened near Yellowknife

Two territorial parks just outside Yellowknife have reopened to the public after being closed because of an encroaching wildfire three weeks ago.

The GNWT announced on Wednesday that both Reid Lake Territorial Park and nearby Cameron River Crossing Territorial Park reopened on Tuesday.

Campers who booked at Reid Lake will be reimbursed for days the park was closed, while extended-stay campsite holders will be refunded on a pro-rated daily rate.

On July 14, cabins and campgrounds roughly 60 kilometers northeast of Yellowknife were evacuated after a wildfire broke out in the area. The Ingraham Trail was also closed to traffic beyond kilometer 49.

Since the fire was first reported, officials say it’s grown to over 76 square kilometers in size and continues to be actioned by crews.

In the past week however, cooler and wetter conditions have assisted fire crews working in the North Slave region.

Fire bans have been lifted at every territorial park in the region except for Reid Lake and Cameron River Crossing. The Ingraham Trail also reopened to traffic on July 23.

The GNWT says 163 wildfires have been reported in the territory this season burning over 176,000 hectares of land.
