Fire ban lifted for Yellowknife, most territorial parks

burning ban has been lifted for Yellowknife as cool, wet conditions settle over much of the territory.

Residents are reminded that fire permits are required when using a fire pit or any other open flame.

A fire ban has also been lifted for territorial parks in the North Slave region, with the exception of Cameron River and Reid Lake Territorial Parks, which remain closed.

Environment and natural resources (ENR) says the fire index is expected to drop to low in the coming days with cloudy and rainy conditions expected through the weekend.

A total of 160 wildfires have been reported across the territory so far this year, which has burned roughly 145,188 hectares of land. Of the 160 fires, 64 have been declared out, 64 are being monitored and 31 are being fought.

Aircraft and ground crews continue to action a forest fire near Reid Lake to prevent growth towards Ingraham Trail. Crews are based at Camp Connections and Reid Lake Campground.

The fire, which totals 6356 hectares, has forced the closure of the Ingraham Trail beyond kilometre 49 since last week.

ENR says we’ve seen two-thirds the amount of fires compared to last year.
