Buildings evacuated in Hay River following gas leak

Several buildings are on evacuation in Hay River’s downtown after a gas line was accidentally cut.

A worker accidentally cut the line with a reciprocating saw during demolition of the Don Stewart Arena.

“The pool and area including Driftwood Diner, NorthMart, and the Source were evacuated and a perimeter set-up to protect the public from any possible danger,” read a statement from Mayor Brad Mapes.

The town says the leak has been reduced to a slow, controlled release, and does not pose a risk to the public.

Officials expect a strong odour to remain until the rest of the system has drained within three to five hours.
