Fibre cut to blame for phone disruptions across the North

Northwestel says a fibre cut in northern British Columbia is to blame for intermittent disruptions to some of its phone services throughout the North.

The telecoms provider says long distance calling, 1-800 calling and wireless services have been impacted in northern British Columbia, the NWT, Yukon and Nunavut.

It’s unclear at this point how or why the cut happened.

So far, the problem has had no impact on video or internet service. Local calling from landlines and landline access to 911 is also not affected in regions that have the service.

Northwestel has rerouted traffic along a redundant path, but customers may experience congestion until repairs are complete.
