Lockout likely for Canada Post, local union president says

A lockout is likely at Canada Post after talks broke off between the Postal Union and the corporation last night.

The union had requested for a two-week extension on the negotiations, but Canada Post rejected that call, citing concerns from customers.

“We’re giving the corporation the message that we are willing to walk and drop our tools and be out of here if you don’t negotiate a fair, collective agreement,” said Lynda LeFrancois, president of local 858.

One of the main sticking points is the 30 per cent difference in pay between urban and rural workers.

Canada Post is warning customers of the likely disruption, which could hit as early as Saturday.

Federal cheques, such as old age security and pension, will continue to be delivered.
