14 vehicles taken off NWT roads as part of national campaign

14 vehicles that were inspected in the NWT as part of a national roadside operation this month were taken off the roads because of ‘major defects.’

Between June 7 and June 9, the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance worked with provincial and territorial partners to conduct the annual initiative.

Roadside authorities were especially focused on tire safety, however all vehicles were subjected to a complete inspection.

In the NWT, the operation was conducted by highway patrol officers working at the commercial weight scales in Enterprise and Inuvik.

Out of the 48 vehicles inspected, 14 – or 29 per cent – were deemed unfit for driving due to ‘major defects’ that required immediate attention.

Commercial motor vehicles and their drivers are checked at inspection sites and roving patrol locations across North America as part of the annual initiative.

An estimated 1.4 million vehicles have been inspected as part of the operation since its inception in 1988.
