Complete gender-based analysis training to help inform policy

Women’s groups in Yellowknife are challenging politicians and residents alike to undertake gender-based analysis training to help inform policy and programming.

According to the Government of Canada, Gender-based Analysis Plus (GBA+) is an analytical tool used to assess the potential impacts of policies, programs and services on diverse groups of women and men.

In 1995, the federal government committed to using GBA+ as a means of advancing gender equality in the country.

Ottawa recently renewed its commitment to the analytical tool and is working to strengthen its implementation.

Here in Yellowknife, the Status of Women Council of the NWT, Native Women’s Association of the NWT, Yellowknife Women’s Society and YWCA are calling on residents to complete introductory training.

“Equality, equity and inclusion are necessary in all policies and programs to allow a society to be fair and equal to all of its citizens,” read a statement issued by the Status of Women Council of the NWT Wednesday.

“GBA+ is an analytical tool we can use to ensure programs and policies are reflective of our society.”

The Government of Canada hopes to use results from the online tool to inform the development of policies, programs and legislation.

While significant advances have been made, equality gaps remain in Canada. On average, women earn only 73.5 cents for every dollar that men earn.

Women are also more likely to be the victims of domestic and sexual violence and continue to be under-represented in leadership and executive positions.

Yellowknife organizations are challenging residents to complete introductory training by July 1 and post their certificates to social media.
