Yellowknife man among four recipients of volunteer award

Four NWT residents, including one from Yellowknife, have been presented with 2016 Outstanding Volunteer Awards.

The annual awards are handed out by the territorial government’s Department of Municipal and Community Affairs to recognize people who go above and beyond in their community.

Awards are handed out to individuals and organizations who help improve the quality of life across the NWT through volunteerism.

“Celebrating and recognizing volunteers across the NWT is an important part of maintaining a sustainable volunteer presence in our communities,” said MACA minister Robert C. McLeod in a statement.

Every January, the department asks residents to nominate people they feel are worthy of an Outstanding Volunteer Award.

Recipients receive $500 to give to a volunteer organization of their choice and a certificate that recognizes them for their community-building efforts.

  • Outstanding Elder Award (55+): Dave Kellett (Yellowknife)
  • Outstanding Youth Award (under 25): Leona Berreault (Fort Liard)
  • Outstanding Individual Award (25-54): Charlene Blake (Tsiighetchic)
  • Outstanding Group Award (number of people): Kamba Carnival Committee (KátlodĂ©Ă©che)
