UPDATED: Northwest Territories teams win broomball world titles

Yellowknife, NWT – Broomball teams from the Northwest Territories have dominated the sport’s world championships in Japan.

The NWT Rebels picked up women’s gold with a 2-1 victory over Australia’s Dingos team, while Yellowknife Ravens defeated a Calgary team 3-0 for the men’s title.

The invitational tournament took place outside Canada for the fifth time in its 23-year history, in the Japanese city of Tomakomai.

“Yellowknife seems to be the broomball capital of the world right now,” NWT Rebels player-coach Tina Locke-Setter told Moose FM from Japan.

“When it actually all works out and you produce the result you were hoping for, it’s intense.

“Going into the second, we were watching the Dingos go to the bench every time and they were dying, they were 100% drained. We knew we had them and with nine minutes left, we put the ball in the net to go up 2-1.

“We had some moments of panic at the end but it was crazy, everybody in the stand was cheering. Everybody was so excited.”

Rebels forward Jenny Crawford was named the women’s MVP at a ceremony following the gold-medal game, while Crawford and Locke-Setter were both named to the tournament all-star team.

Both of the territory’s teams spent the night celebrating in local karaoke bars.

“There were probably 10 of us ladies and five or six of the men, and we ended up taking over one of the karaoke bars,” said Locke-Setter.

“We were singing We Are The Champions at the top of our lungs. There was no need for microphones. It was a fun night.”
