NWT Film Commission brings back rebate program

Filmmakers looking to make a movie in the Northwest Territories can once again apply to receive rebates from the NWT Film Commission

Established last year by the Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment, the Film Rebate Program offers producers from within – and outside the territory – the opportunity to receive rebates on goods, services, travel and wages for films made in the NWT.

Rebates start at 20 per cent, with a bonus 15 per cent for movies that are filmed outside of Yellowknife.

“The purpose of the program is to compete with other jurisdictions so companies will use our locations,” said Camilla MacEachern, film commissioner with the GNWT.

The rebate program is also designed to leverage funds into the territory and create more opportunities for the local film industry, according to MacEachern.

Last year, four companies took advantage of the program and there is some interest in the program again this year.

No big-name Hollywood studios were among the four last year, but MacEachern has her “fingers crossed for bigger names to come to the NWT to make movies”.

At the end of the day, she hopes the program will create as many opportunities as possible for the local film industry.

Applications are due by May 6 for productions taking place through March 2017. For application details, click here.
