Man charged with murder following assault in Dettah

A 30-year-old man has been charged with murder in connection with an incident that happened in Dettah earlier this week.

UPDATE: Stanley Abel Jr. sentenced to 5 years for killing uncle

Around 4:15am Wednesday, police responded to a disturbance at a home in the community, where they found a ‘grievously injured’ man.

By the time officers arrived, the suspect had already fled the scene. The victim meanwhile, was transported to Stanton Territorial Hospital.

On Wednesday afternoon, police arrested a man at a residence in Yellowknife in connection with the assault and later said no other suspects were being sought.

On Thursday, RCMP announced that the victim had died and that Stanley Abel Jr. had been charged with murder.

The victim has been identified locally and in media reports as his uncle, Herman Abel.

Abel Jr. is expected to make a second court appearance in Yellowknife Friday.
