Curtains and porcupine quills: Fashion show hits snow castle

A Toronto clothing line and four NWT designers will show off some of their winter outfits during a fashion show in Yellowknife Wednesday night.

The Best in Snow Fashion Show will take over the snow castle on Yellowknife Bay from 8:00 until 9:30pm.

The event will feature clothing from Preloved – a Toronto-based upcycling brand – in addition to pieces from NWT designers Gisele Forget, Caroline Blechert, Janet Dean and Tishna Marlowe.

Yellowknife resident Dana Bowen is coordinating the show. She says each designer will bring something unique to the show.

While Forget is best known for draping her models in vintage curtains, much of Blechert’s work is with jewelry made from porcupine quills.

Marlowe, of Lutselk’e, has gained recognition for putting a modern twist on traditional Dene fashion while Janet Dean is known for her hand-dyed silk pieces.

Bowen, who’s studied fashion history, expects as many as 40 outfits to be showcased during the show.

“Fashion isn’t something that’s largely talked about here in Yellowknife so I thought it was a neat idea,” she said.  “The five designers are all very different from one another so people can expect an eclectic mix of clothing.

“There will be a lot of upcycling pieces mixed in with traditional clothing as well.”

Tickets for the show cost $10.
