Meet Starlite: Yellowknife’s new Scoop the Poop mascot

A husky named Starlite has been named Yellowknife’s new Scoop the Poop mascot, after earning more votes than any other canine in a recent social media contest run by the City of Yellowknife.

Rosee finished second with 838 likes.

Over the past couple weeks, more than 150 dog owners uploaded pictures of their pooches on the city’s Facebook page.

In the end, Starlite accumulated 1,151 likes to secure the win while Rosee finished a distant second with 838.

Last month, city officials said they needed a local dog to become the face of its Scoop the Poop campaign, which reminds dog owners to clean up after their pets.

“The idea is trying to make the community more conscientious in cleaning up after their pets,” said Brian Kelln, the city’s community services program manager.

“We want to encourage a healthier environment. A clean city is a happy city.”

As the new face of the Scoop the Poop campaign, Starlite will receive a professional photo shoot before being featured on a poster or website near you.

“Thank you to everyone who participated,” the city wrote on its Facebook page. “We are thrilled to see how many beautiful dogs and responsible pet owners live in Yellowknife.”
