#pledgeforparity: NWT honours International Women’s Day

YWCA Yellowknife wants to celebrate women who make a difference in northern communities as part of International Women’s Day.

The group is holding a social media contest this week, encouraging residents to nominate women they feel are worthy of recognition.

Using the hashtag #NWTwoman on the YWCA’s Facebook or Twitter page, residents can tell a story about someone who has had a positive impact on their life or serves as a role model in their community.

The deadline to nominate someone is noon on Wednesday, with a winner being randomly selected on Thursday.

“We’ve always been a strong advocate for women and we thought it’d be nice to find a little way to recognize women throughout the North,” said Alayna Ward, director of community relations with YWCA Yellowknife.

“We’ve had everyone from moms, to girlfriends, to foster parents to teachers so it’s really been inspiring.”

Starting next month, YWCA Yellowknife will launch a year-long campaign in celebration of its 50th anniversary.

Wise Women Awards

Meanwhile, five women – including one from Hay River – will be recognized with Wise Women Awards in Yellowknife Tuesday night.

The awards have been handed out annually by the Status of Women Council NWT since 1992, honouring women who serve as role models in their community.

Martina Norwegian of Fort Simpson
Edna Dow of Hay River

The women will be recognized during a public ceremony at the Explorer Hotel. A meet and greet will start at 6pm, followed by the awards ceremony from 7 until 9pm.
