Warrant issued after cash seized near fatal Fort Prov crash

Police have issued an arrest warrant for a man after a large sum of cash was seized from the scene of a fatal crash near Fort Providence last fall.

On October 16, one person died and two more were injured in a truck crash on Highway 3 near Chan Lake.

Following a lengthy investigation involving forensic analysis, police have charged Mohamed Mohamud Mohamed with one count of possession of the proceeds of crime over $5000.

It’s believed that he obtained the money by selling illicit drugs in Yellowknife last year. Police say the cash was in a safe when officers found it near the scene of the accident.

Mohamed also has outstanding warrants in Ontario and Quebec. His current whereabouts are unknown to police.

“This investigation is part of the Northwest Territories RCMP commitment to decrease and ultimately eliminate drug trafficking in our communities,” said RCMP in a statement.

“Drug trafficking is a societal problem that creates many spin-off crimes and affects all Canadians.”
