Valentine’s Gala pulls in $58K for YK Community Foundation

The Yellowknife Community Foundation (YCF) has announced that over $58,000 was raised during its recent Valentine’s Gala fundraiser.

The seventh annual event took place at the Explorer Hotel last Saturday.

Funds raised during the gala usually help cover the foundation’s administrative costs, which allows the group to redistribute thousands of dollars every year to support local groups and projects.

Over 200 people dined, danced and participated in live and silent auctions throughout the evening.

The biggest winner of the night, however, was Yellowknife councillor Niels Konge, who went home with a $15,000 double halo pennant provided by Diavik and Crossworks Manufacturing.

In addition to supplying the pennant, the diamond giant also presented the foundation with a $25,000 cheque to assist students pursuing careers in mining or the trades.

Since its inception in 1993, the Yellowknife Community Foundation has awarded nearly $750,000 in grants and scholarships.

Charles Dent, chair of the foundation’s gala committee, told Moose FM that wouldn’t be possible without the support of Yellowknife residents during their annual fundraiser.

The foundation’s 2015 event remains the most successful to date, when Dent says over $70,000 was raised.
