Drugs, impaired driving charges laid in Yellowknife checkstops

Charges for impaired driving and drug trafficking were laid during separate checkstops in Yellowknife over the weekend.

Altogether, police checked over 100 vehicles at checkstops on the Latham Island Bridge and on Franklin Avenue between Friday night and Saturday morning.

In the early hours of Saturday, RCMP issued a 24-hour driving suspension to one driver for driving while impaired by drugs. The person was also found to be in possession of marijuana.

Meanwhile, a checkstop set up on Franklin Avenue between Forrest Drive and Old Airport Road nabbed two impaired drivers.

Police say charges are pending against one of the drivers after they made an attempt to avoid the checkstop altogether.

Later that same morning, another impaired driving investigation was initiated. This time, a male driver was arrested and is facing a charge for refusing to provide a breath sample.

Police also located and seized a gram of crack cocaine. Charges under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act are pending.
