Crack cocaine seized in Hay River, teenager charged

Police say a 19-year-old has been charged with drug trafficking after crack cocaine and weed were seized from a home in Hay River’s West Channel.

Hay River RCMP found around 30 grams of crack cocaine, 30 grams of marijuana and “a significant quantity of cash and drug paraphernalia” while searching the building on Wednesday afternoon.

Calvin James King, 19, of Hay River, faces a range of charges related to trafficking, drug possession and possession of a weapon.

He is due in territorial court on April 18.

“The investigation was based on information from the community – concerned citizens came forward to provide information,” RCMP Sgt Tyler Codling told Moose FM.

“[The suspect was] somebody that we were aware of for a while, but had to gather sufficient grounds to obtain that warrant.

“The seizure was a little over $6,000 in cash, crack cocaine, powdered cocaine and marijuana as well as scales, bowls, spoons and other things like that typically used for the trafficking side of the drug trade.”
