Yellowknife, NWT – Today marks the official start of the Canadian Cancer Society’s annual Daffodil Days fundraising campaign.
It will be the final campaign in Yellowknife for the woman who has been the face for the Cancer Society in the city for the past four years.
Lorna Deveau is stepping down this summer as the Cancer Society Revenue Developer in Yellowknife.
She’s leaving town with her husband who’s in the military.
We asked Deveau about her time in Yellowknife.
“I’m choking up actually, I will never forget Yellowknife, the people I’ve met and been able to work with. I was honoured to work with the Canadian Cancer Society and all the good work we do. It’s changed me, I’ve become much more humble because I see what people are doing and I know I’ve made a difference in someone’s life and that’s all that matters to me.”
Deveau’s replacement, transplanted Torontonian Nikki Grobbecker, is already on the job.
She talks about what she looks forward to in her new position.
“I think being able to go to work every day knowing that you’re making a difference in people’s lives. Being able to work for an organization like this is something that hits very close to home for me. Knowing that I’m coming to work every day and changing people’s lives like this touches the heart.”
People are encouraged to purchase and wear a daffodil to support the fight against cancer.
They’re available all over Yellowknife including the Centre Square Mall, Wal-Mart, the liquor store and Stanton Hospital.
