Inuvik RCMP have ordered an external review after a woman died in police custody over the weekend.
On Saturday, RCMP say they arrested a woman without incident for being intoxicated in public.
She was taken to the Inuvik Hospital for assessment, where she was deemed fit for incarceration by medical staff.
On Sunday, the female prisoner was in process of being released from custody when she went into medical distress.
First aid was administered on scene before the woman was escorted to hospital, where she would later die.
Police say she was cooperative during her arrest and time spent in custody.
The office of the territory’s chief coroner is assisting in the investigation, though no cause of death has been determined at this time.
The external police review will be carried out by the Medicine Hat Police Service.
