Yellowknife wins Northern Hockey Challenge in Hay River

The Yellowknife Flyers won the weekend’s Northern Hockey Challenge tournament in Hay River, picking up two wins from three.

Hosts the Huskies won Friday’s opening contest 8-4 but were undone by back-to-back weekend defeats – going down 14-3 and 6-4.

That’s a reversal of last year’s outcome, when the Huskies were 2-1 series winners.

The mini-tournament between the two communities celebrated its third anniversary at the weekend, having developed from an initial, larger tournament featuring seven teams spanning the North.

“It was not what we wanted for the tiebreaker game but it was a great weekend of hockey for our community,” Hay River mayor Brad Mapes posted online.

He added: “Not looking forward to having to wear that ugly-looking orange jersey for a photo over my friendly wager with Mayor Heyck of Yellowknife.”

Donning the opposing team’s jersey has been a forfeit in place between the two communities’ mayors since the tournament’s inception, when Yellowknife’s Mark Heyck presented then-mayor of Hay River Andrew Cassidy with an example of the city’s orange uniform.

With high lead at 31 of 38 NWT schools, more public site tests to be “determined”

Testing results show another school in the territory with elevated levels of lead in water. Since comprehensive testing of schools across the N.W.T. began this fall, 31 school sites out of 38 announced to date have tested positive for elevated levels of lead. Hay River Councillor and Deputy Mayor Keith Dohey issued the announcement on the town’s website and social media page on Thursday. Dohey said that after years of service, the committee will no longer be overseeing the library as of April 30.

Military says largest Arctic NANOOK operation to date has concluded

The Canadian Armed Forces says its largest and most comprehensive winter annual NANOOK operation yet has concluded. This year the operation exceeded its annual distance range by thousands of kilometres and took place over an extended period beginning in February. Operation NANOOK-NUNALIVUT 2026 took place from February to April 2026 and included approximately 1,300 armed forces personnel.

Parking meter rates to increase beginning May 1

The City of Yellowknife is reminding residents that the updated parking meter rates approved in December of last year will be coming into effect beginning on May 1, 2026.
