Taking the mickeys: RCMP seize booze destined for Kugaaruk

Police in Yellowknife say they’ve stopped an individual trying to smuggle 28 mickeys of vodka into an alcohol-free community.

Officials at the city’s airport found the haul of 375 ml bottles inside baggage destined for Kugaaruk, Nunavut, early on Tuesday morning.

That amounts to more than 10 litres of liquor, which is twice the legal five-litre limit for someone boarding a standard passenger flight.

In addition, Kugaaruk is an alcohol prohibited community – meaning absolutely no alcohol is allowed, by law.

Despite this, police said no charges were pending.
